Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the blow of this disaster.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you encounter situations so awful that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer level of unadulterated absurdity and just throws its hands up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping strategy.
But then, you realize that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain bad. And the Very bad laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of confusion. You question about the purpose of it all. Was this some kind of twisted art experiment?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?

The tsunami struck without warning, destroying entire towns in its sweep. Buildings crumbled like house of cards, and the chaos that followed was deafening. Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't do it to look right. As I was dashing out the door, I fell and with a thud all over the floor. To make matters worse, I was totally behind schedule for work.
I arrived. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was a hopeless situation.
The rest of the day was even worse. fell apart. I get anything done.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
